How Speed Impacts Car Accidents

A little extra speed can greatly impact the damages of a car accident. Speed limits are put in place to keep drivers, passengers, and pedestrians safe on roadways. Going too fast causes a danger on the roadways. Many drivers admit to driving five to ten miles per hour over the speed limit. With just one percent increase in speed, your chance of being in a car accident increase by two percent. Additionally, the risk of serious injury increases by three percent.

Besides increasing the chances of being injured or in an accident, speeding can affect the ability to brake. If you are driving faster, you have a lower reaction time to brake in the event of an emergency. Being able to brake quickly is imperative when a car stops suddenly in front of you, or in order to stop for a pedestrian.

Can Speed be Determined After an Accident?

If you have been in a high-speed accident, there are ways to show that a driver was speeding. Since speed can be such a devastating factor, it is essential to show that the other driver hit your vehicle at an excessive speed. An estimate can be prepared by calculating the speed the driver was going in order to cause the resulting damages. Accident reconstruction specialists are available to piece together the accident scene to determine what events occurred. Experts will look to the length of skid marks and the damages sustained to a vehicle to determine speed.
