Officials at Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital Resign After Investigation

Several people in administrative positions at Johns Hopkins children’s hospital in Florida have resigned after a year long investigation has revealed the high rate of injuries and death among the patients at the facility. The investigation showed that in 2017, roughly one in 10 young patients at the facility died and others were left with severe injuries after undergoing surgery at the Heart Institute portion of the hospital.

The hospital had been warned as early as 2015 by employees that some of the surgeons should not be performing certain procedures. The children suffered from complications including infections, needles lost inside their bodies, failing patches on hearts, bursting sutures, and other preventable issues.

Defining Medical Malpractice in Children

Pediatricians, pediatric surgeons, and other health care providers that treat children have a duty to the children they treat to ensure that they are meeting certain standards of their profession. Failure to act in this manner is a breach in this duty. If your child suffers damages due to this breach, the negligence could result in a medical malpractice claim against the medical professional.

Types of Child Medical Malpractice

Mistakes in medical care, or medical malpractice, can be particularly devastating to a child. They don’t understand the pain that they are going through. These errors may also cause developmental problems for the child that could have been prevented. The issues may cause the child to miss certain educational opportunities or loss of career opportunities as they become an adult.

One of the most common types of medical malpractice in children is that of misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis. A medical provider may not think to look for certain conditions because they are more predominant in adults, but many of these conditions have a better outcome if they are discovered earlier on.

Filing a Lawsuit on Behalf of Your Minor Child

If your child has been injured by a doctor or other healthcare provider, you may be entitled to bring a lawsuit on their behalf against the negligent party. An experienced medical malpractice attorney can help you understand the legal process of a medical malpractice claim and represent you and your child during the process.

Your attorney will also help you determine the potential damages in your claim as this is a critical part of any pediatric medical malpractice claim. Damages will be calculated based on the existing damages but will also take into consideration things such as complications they will suffer later on in life as well.
