Charging Up Your Knowledge of the Latest Risks of Vaping Devices

Vape smoke cloud

The South Florida Sun Sentinel recently reported that the state of New York has become the first state to ban the sale of flavored e-cigarette vaping devices. This change comes in the midst of a mysterious surge of severe breathing illnesses linked to vaping that federal health officials have been investigating. The prohibition, which covers flavored e-cigarettes and other vaping products except for menthol and tobacco flavors, goes into effect immediately and gives retailers only two weeks to remove merchandise from store shelves. In asserting the rationale behind the emergency ban which will remain in effect for at least 90 days, the state’s governor referred to surging use among young people as well as the fact that the true risks of these popular products remain unknown. Other states are also considering bans.

What is Vaping?

Vape pens are electronic cigarettes that produce vapor that users inhale. While these devices were invented to emit doses of nicotine in the form of vapor for their users, many people also use them for THC vaporization including many of Florida’s medical marijuana patients.

A Turbulent History – E-Cigarette Explosions

Over the last decade or so that e-cigarettes have been available, they have quickly gained popularity among people of different ages and demographics, many of who view these devices as a safer alternative to traditional smoking methods. But with this popularity, there have also been reported tragedies that periodically appear in the media, many of which were historically related to explosions. Last year, for example, a St. Petersburg man was found dead after his vape pen exploded, burning more than 80 percent of his body. This is far from the only incident. This FDA has publicly expressed that it is aware of explosion events and is collecting data to help address this problem.

The Current Challenge – the Bizarre Lung Disease Associated With Vaping

The Sun Sentinel addressed another more recent threat in its article announcing New York’s recent ban on these devices. It was also reported that health officials nationwide are investigating hundreds of cases of serious breathing illnesses in people who use e-cigarettes and other vaping devices. Unfortunately, there have already been 380 confirmed and probable cases in 36 states and one territory, including six deaths.

Have You or a Loved One Been Injured as the Result of Vaping?

While the dangers of smoking cigarettes are well documented, the risks of vaping are still relatively unknown and are only beginning to become clear. Unfortunately, this means that there are a wide variety of ways in which you can become injured while using one. Because of the fact that e-cigarettes are so new, this is a novel and complex area of law and you will likely need the help of an experienced personal injury attorney in order to recover from the responsible parties.
