The 3 Deadliest Roads in South Florida

Car accidents can occur unexpectedly at any time, and anywhere there is a negligent driver on the road. Even though this is a true statement, car accidents happen more on highways that are extremely congested or that have vehicles traveling at higher speeds. If you are driving in South Florida, it is wise to know what highways are considered the most dangerous and where the majority of accidents occur. It can also be helpful to know what you can do to reduce the risk of being involved in an accident.

Here you will find the three deadliest roads in South Florida.

Interstate 95

Between the years of 2004 and 2008, there were 662 fatal accidents on the stretch of I-95 that ran through Florida. This means there was one fatal accident for every 1.73 miles along the 382.15 mile stretch of I-95 in the Sunshine State. This makes sense when you consider the fact that daily maximum traffic can reach 300,000 vehicles.

Interstate 4

This interstate is also called the “haunted highway” by locals, I-4 is considered to be the most congested and busiest interstate in the entire nation. Between the same time period (2004 to 2008) there were 209 fatal accidents along the 132.39 stretch in Florida. This equates to an accident every 1.58 miles.

While there is an old superstition that the reason so many fatalities occur on this road is because the road was built over a grave and the family haunts those who drive it, the real reason is because of a large number of motor vehicles present and the increased number of distracted drivers on the road.

Interstate 10

This interstate runs from Jacksonville to Los Angeles, and in 2014, 278 people died on this road. This road runs for 362 miles in Florida and is one of the primary east-west highways in the state. This offers a more direct route than the other popular east to west road, US 90, which means it is attractive to large trucks and interstate travelers.

Driving Behaviors that Increase the Potential for an Accident

While these roadways are dangerous themselves, there are some factors that can contribute to the prevalence of accidents. Some of these factors include:

  • More and more cases of distracted driving
  • Aggressive driving (road rage)
  • Not following the posted traffic signs and laws
